The redevelopment of the Gates Rubber site into the new
Metropolitan Gardens residential and commercial development
received a huge boost this week when it was announced that the
site will become one of only three in the country to host a
Sundance Cinema location. Created by actor Robert Redford, the
cinema is an extension of his famous Sundance Institute in Utah
and will show independent movies promoted by the institute. The
redevelopment of the site into Metropolitan Gardens is a joint
effort of Joseph Freed and Associates LLC and Cherokee Denver LLC.
Local developer Pat Broe has applied to the City of Denver for a
revision to the approved redevelopment plan for the Country
Club Gardens Apartments at Ellsworth/Downing. The existing
development plan allowing three 300-foot residential towers was
approved in 2001. The project has not yet been built and Broe now
proposes to reduce the size of the development to two towers of
the same size. Surrounding neighbors including those at The
Norman, a historic condominium-building object to the new
development, not realizing it that Broe has the right to build a
larger project.
The Lowry Redevelopment Authority reports that the historic
Lowry Air Force Base Commander's Home is now for sale. See it
for yourself every Sunday in June from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The
Commander's Home is located at 7400 East Sixth Avenue Parkway,
just east of Quebec Street. Built in 1904, the Spanish,
eclectic-style home originally housed the superintendent of the
Agnes C. Phipps Memorial Sanatorium, a tuberculosis hospital. It
later became the Lowry Officer's Club, home to all base commanders
and eventually became a private residence. The 3,500 square-foot
home is reported to be a great remodel opportunity. The
Commander's Home will be sold through a sealed bid process. Sealed
bids are due June 29.
A deadline for the offer to purchase Wild Oats Markets, Inc.
by Whole Foods Market Inc. has been extended a second time
to June 20. The Federal Trade Commission has raised anti-trust
issues, but has not challenged the sale.
Leetsdale Self Storage, the new 4-story building across
from George Washington High School at Exposition/Leetsdale sold
for $8,000,000. With some 70,100 SF the price is equivalent to
$114/SF. The facility contains 623 climate controlled storage
units.
The Daniels Fund headquarters at East 1st Ave./Monroe St.
now has a statue of Bill Daniels on its front porch. Bob Titsche,
a former business associate and friend of Daniels who fell on hard
times, similar to Daniels at one time, donated most, if not all of
the money for the statue.
With concerns about traffic congestion, carbon emissions and the
cost of gas rising, Transportation Solutions announces its
Designed to Ride campaign. Nearly two years ago, Transportation
Solutions obtained federal grant funds to pilot a program intended
to increase transit ridership in the Cherry Creek area. TS is now
ready to unveil 50 redesigned bus stops- introducing a bold,
artistic look and detailed information for riders. Featuring
remarks from Denver City Councilwoman Jeanne Robb and RTD
Director, Bill Elfenbein, this brief ceremony will celebrate these
enhancements to the transit environment and the partners who made
it possible. Refreshments will be served.
Date: Tuesday, June 5th
Time: 9 to 9:30 am
Location: Fillmore Plaza, near the intersection of 1st Avenue and
